More About Matthew R Lewis

Matthew was born in 1959, Hertfordshire, England. He studied theatre design in North London.

Matthew was a self taught photographer. He rarely did studio work and preferred to work with natural light.

For Matthew his photography was everything. It consumed his life.

A regular contributor to i-D Magazine, Matthew's work also featured in Frieze, Attitude and Gay Times. His work is referenced in many books with exemplary portraits of artists, gay culture and characters from the high and low life across the world. A selection of Matthew's portraits were acquired by The National Portrait Gallery, see link below

Matthew was incredibly well read and had a huge and eclectic library. He engaged his subjects on an informed and personal level which elevated his work to a unique level. Matthew took his own life at the age of 49.

Matthew's partner of twenty years, Andrew curates the archive and the website, manages Fine Art Print sales and handles all licensing matters. He is the owner of copyright for all Matthew's work © Matthew R Lewis and can be contacted here
